With the devastation caused by Hurricane Milton and the related storms this week that recently impacted Florida, my heart goes out to all those affected. The images of destruction, from flooded homes to the aftermath of tornadoes, are devastating, and it’s impossible not to feel a sense of sorrow for the people facing such immense challenges in its wake.
This disaster prompted me to reach out to friends and check in on those who live in the state. Many of my dear friends who live in Florida were fortunately mostly unaffected, but it was a sobering reminder of how quickly life can be upended by natural disasters.

Earlier this year, when the world felt a little calmer, my Leadership Academy best friend Brittany flew up to New York City from Florida for a visit. We hadn’t seen each other in what felt like forever, so I knew I wanted to plan something special with her to make her trip unforgettable. With Halloween right around the corner, I’ve been thinking a lot about that visit—and one of the highlights was our magical and interactive potion-making night out at The Cauldron NYC.
Originally from London and now located in the heart of the Flatiron District, The Cauldron is an immersive, magical cocktail bar experience where patrons get to brew their own potions, cast spells, and enjoy a night of wizardry, complete with drag bingo on certain weeknights. It’s also LGBT-friendly which made it feel even safer and more welcoming for me! 🏳️🌈
For a couple of fantasy enthusiasts like Brittany and me, it was the perfect place to dive into the world of wands, wizards, and witchcraft for an evening we won’t soon forget! 😁
A Potion Experience Like No Other: Wands, Bunsen Burners, and Sparkles 🪄✨
When Brittany flew up from Florida for her visit to New York, I thought what better way to kick off her stay in New York than a magical potion-making adventure? That’s how we found ourselves at The Cauldron NYC, ready for a night filled with bubbling brews and interactive spell-casting.
The experience began as soon as we stepped through the doors. Immediately, we were transported into a magical world where potions, wands, and spells were the norm. All of the staff, with makeup, pointy ears, and long goblin noses, promptly seated us while we waited for our potions class.
We had a few bubbling shots to kick off the evening and they certainly didn’t disappoint. I got the green “Bubbling Shot of Death” and Brittany tried a “Shot of Gold.”
Once transported to the potions room, we changed into our wizard robes. We were handed our wands (yes, actual wands!) and were ready to begin our journey into the unknown. The excitement of wielding a wand, even as adults, was contagious. We were laughing and loving all of the attention to detail that The Cauldron put into this performance from the very first flick.
One of the most impressive moments came when we were tasked with summoning our first drink from the mouth of a dragon. With a wave of our wands, the drinks were “magically” dispensed, setting the tone for what was clearly going to be a night filled with unexpected fun.
Brewing Our Potions: A Science Experiment with a Magical Twist
Once we had our drinks in hand, it was time to get serious (or as serious as two excited friends can be in a wizarding-themed bar). Our potion-making experience officially began with the opening of our spellbooks. Inside, we found detailed instructions for brewing two unique potions that we would craft throughout the evening. 📚
Even though the place has no affiliation with Harry Potter, it reminded me so much of something you’d see in a Harry Potter theme park like the one I visited last year! As a huge fan of the Harry Potter franchise, I couldn’t stop smiling. 🧙♂️
From the cocktail spell book, each group can select 2 cocktails of your liking to conjure.
The Maleficaria
The first potion we prepared was the Maleficaria, an eye-catching, glitter-filled cocktail served in a margarita glass. This one really stole the show, both visually and taste-wise. Sparkles shimmered through the drink as we swirled it around, and the combination of flavors was the perfect blend of sweet and tangy.
Adding sparkles magical effect along with boba as a final touch made it feel like we were actually brewing something straight out of a wizard’s laboratory.
In this next video clip, you can watch as we add the boba to our potions!
The Summoner’s Siphon
The second potion we concocted was called The Summoner’s Siphon—a warm, spiced drink that we brewed over an actual Bunsen burner.
Watching the mixture bubble and steam made us feel like mad scientists for a moment, and we couldn’t help but marvel at how interactive the whole experience was. The potion was strong and sweet, with just the right kick to keep us warm on a chilly New York night. If you visit in October, I think this choice is a no brainer. It’s also very fun to create because of the tools that are needed.
The final result is a smokey deep flavor that might be preferred by those who like a more intense flavor, rather than something sweet or sugary.
A Night Full of Surprises: Drag Bingo and a Magical Shot
Just when we thought the night couldn’t get any better, we stumbled upon an unexpected surprise on our way out: Drag Bingo! We hadn’t realized it was part of the evening’s events, but as soon as the queen took stage, we knew we were in for an unforgettable experience and grabbed a tall table near the bar.
Drag Bingo at The Cauldron is no ordinary bingo night. The queen was hilarious, full of personality, and had the entire room laughing uncontrollably. The atmosphere was electric as they called out numbers, poked fun at the audience, and kept the night lively with their quick wit and sass.
To my surprise, I ended up winning one of the rounds! My prize? A green, bubbly magic shot from the bar. The shot was a delightful blend of sweetness with a fizzy, effervescent finish—exactly the kind of whimsical drink you’d expect at a place like this. Winning at Drag Bingo felt like the icing on the cake, and Brittany and I couldn’t stop laughing as we toasted to our magical night out.
Immersive Magic: Costumes, Characters, and Themed Décor
What really sets The Cauldron NYC apart from other themed bars is the level of immersion. Every detail, from the costumes worn by the staff to the intricately decorated interior to the way the staff speaks while guiding you through the journey, makes you feel like you’ve stepped into a world of magic. The bartenders, dressed as witches and wizards, fully committed to their roles, staying in character and adding a playful charm to the entire experience.
As we followed the potion recipes, the staff would occasionally pop by to offer magical “assistance” and check on our progress, making sure we didn’t accidentally create a potion that would turn us into frogs. The décor of the bar was equally impressive—dark wood, potion bottles lining the shelves, dimly lit lanterns, and hints of enchantment everywhere you looked. It was the perfect backdrop for our night of potion-making and spell-casting.
Even the drinks we made were more than just cocktails—they were experiences in themselves. Between the glowing and sparkling potions, fog effects from dry ice, and colorful concoctions, everything about The Cauldron felt meticulously planned to make sure guests were fully immersed in the magical experience.
Beyond the Potions: Wrapping Up Our Spellbinding Evening
By the time Brittany and I were finished with our potion-brewing adventure, we were practically buzzing—not just from the magic cocktails but from the sheer joy of the experience. It’s rare to find a place that commits so fully to an interactive, themed experience the way The Cauldron does, and it’s what makes this bar truly special.
The only regret I have is not booking a reservation to return this month, in October, because it truly is the perfect time of year to visit this location.
Before we exited, we took a few more moments to soak in the atmosphere, snapping photos with the drag queen who made our evening even better and chatting about how much fun we had throughout the night. Brittany couldn’t stop raving about how much she loved it, and I have to agree—The Cauldron NYC stands out as one of the most unique and magical experiences I’ve had in the city.
If you’re a fan of fantasy, magic, or even just unique nights out with friends, The Cauldron is a must-visit. Between the interactive potion-making, the hilarious drag bingo, and the fully immersive atmosphere, it offers something special that you won’t find anywhere else in New York City. Whether you go for the wands, the potions, or simply the whimsical vibe, you’re in for a night of magic, laughter, and memories you’ll want to relive again and again.
And who knows? Maybe you’ll even get lucky and win yourself a magical shot at Drag Bingo, just like I did!
Base package tickets, at the time of writing, are $49.99 per adult and $44.99 for students. For the most current pricing and information, visit The Cauldron.
