The chocolateria primarily serves &#8220;chocolate con churros&#8221; or <strong>churros<\/strong> with\u00a0a cup of<strong> melted dark chocolate<\/strong> used for dipping. Both Jorge and his father recommended we stop by to try their churros and chocolate so we added it to our list of destinations.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/therockysafari.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/IMG_1294.jpg\" alt=\"Chocolater\u00eda San Gin\u00e9s\" width=\"695\" height=\"348\" \/><\/p>\n<p>At the\u00a0caf\u00e9, we ordered what they are known for: churros and chocolate! They also serve\u00a0cakes and coffee, though that is not what either of us went for.\u00a0The chocolateria has been serving churros and chocolate <strong>since 1894<\/strong> giving it historical significance among both tourists and local residents in\u00a0Madrid. Its name is now recognized by chocolate enthusiasts around the world.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/therockysafari.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/IMG_1776.jpg\" alt=\"Madrid travel \" width=\"695\" height=\"348\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The interior is decorated with mirrors, green wooden panels, green velvet seats, and marble tables. Lining the walls of the chocolateria are photographs both old and new of famous celebrities from all around the world who have dropped by to try their famous churros and chocolate.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/therockysafari.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/IMG_1296.jpg\" alt=\"churros and chocolate\" width=\"695\" height=\"348\" \/><\/p>\n<p>On our first visit, Jorge and I tried several of the large churros (which later turned out to be both of our favorites &#8211; even after ordering the thin kind\u00a0during our next\u00a0visit.)\u00a0The chocolateria staff\u00a0deep-fries the churros until they are the perfect shade of golden-brown. Fresh\u00a0out of the oil, the warm\u00a0churros are brought out to your table along with a cup of steaming hot dark\u00a0chocolate. The cup of chocolate\u00a0is prepared Spanish-style: thick, dark, and strong.<\/p>\n<p>The staff member making the churros cuts them to the perfect length. Jorge explained to me that the workers\u00a0actually make the churros by pouring\u00a0one long spiral of batter into the hot frying oil. From our seats, we could peek\u00a0into the kitchen and see where the worker\u00a0was spinning a large machine that was pouring\u00a0the churro batter into the frying area. The churros were then\u00a0cut to the ideal length for dipping. It was a fascinating process to watch. After trying them once, I immediately fell in love and made sure that we returned at least once more before leaving the city of Madrid.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/therockysafari.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/IMG_1970.jpg\" alt=\"churros and chocolate\" width=\"695\" height=\"348\" \/><\/p>\n<p>When we finally left Madrid to travel to Jorge&#8217;s hometown, his family\u00a0explained to me that churros\u00a0and chocolate\u00a0is a typical breakfast in Spain. During two of the days that I stayed with his family, they picked up hot chocolate &amp; churros from a totally separate local chocolateria.
