{"id":11244,"date":"2014-06-11T09:01:51","date_gmt":"2014-06-11T13:01:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/basicallybeyondbasic.com\/?p=11244"},"modified":"2023-08-25T17:16:33","modified_gmt":"2023-08-25T21:16:33","slug":"will-my-parents-let-me-live-in-a-gay-dorm","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.therockysafari.com\/2014\/06\/11\/will-my-parents-let-me-live-in-a-gay-dorm\/","title":{"rendered":"Will My Parents Let Me Live in a Gay Dorm?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I don&#8217;t know why my roommate and I are having such bad luck with housing at Rutgers&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>We both got <strong>terrible<\/strong>\u00a0lottery numbers and as of right now, not only do we <em>still<\/em> not have housing for the fall semester but there are another 20 people ahead of us on the waitlist. It has gotten to the point where I can&#8217;t even name a single person I know who doesn&#8217;t already have their living arrangements figured out for the fall.<\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s just say if my roommate and I\u00a0could commute, we&#8217;d be commuting.<\/p>\n<p>With off-campus options running out and very little time left for an on-campus offer, I feel like we only have one option left. Rutgers has a rainbow gender-neutral dorm for the LGBT community and my roommate and I would both be eligible to live there together.<\/p>\n<p>The problem: <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">I don&#8217;t know what I&#8217;m going to tell my parents.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>They&#8217;ll either see it the way I see it and be super happy and grateful that such an option\u00a0exists&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;Or&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>They&#8217;ll FREAK OUT and forbid me from living there.<\/p>\n<p>(Again, I don&#8217;t <em>think<\/em> they&#8217;d react that\u00a0negatively but I never really know what to expect anymore.)<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_11254\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11254\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-11254 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.therockysafari.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/51urhpgsfll-_sx300_.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"\/cdn-cgi\/image\/width=300,height=200,fit=crop,quality=80,format=auto,onerror=redirect,metadata=none\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/51urhpgsfll-_sx300_.jpg 300w, \/cdn-cgi\/image\/width=290,height=193,fit=crop,quality=80,format=auto,onerror=redirect,metadata=none\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/51urhpgsfll-_sx300_.jpg 290w, \/cdn-cgi\/image\/width=223,height=150,fit=crop,quality=80,format=auto,onerror=redirect,metadata=none\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/51urhpgsfll-_sx300_.jpg 223w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-11254\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mom and Dad, welcome to Rainbow \ud83d\ude09<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I can just imagine the five hundred million different ways the conversation could go. I&#8217;m concerned that asking to live in an LGBT dormitory is going to serve as &#8220;confirmation&#8221; that I&#8217;m &#8220;actually&#8221; gay and that coming out wasn&#8217;t a joke &#8211; and that won&#8217;t go over well.<\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t think they took it seriously when I came out.<\/p>\n<p>I can totally picture my mom telling me that I can&#8217;t live in the dorm because it would validate the truth too much since she is still hanging onto this\u00a0last string of hope that I might\u00a0one day magically decide to be straight again.
