5 Steps to Steeping a Magical Cup of Bella Luna Blue.

Step 1: Buy Bella Luna Blue on the night of a Blue Moon.

A blue moon is the second full moon in a given calendar month. These are quite rare so plan ahead. Earl Grey Bella Luna is only available on nights of a full moon. Bella Luna Blue is only for sale on the night of a blue moon. Since the chance to buy this tea only happens, well, once in a blue moon, be sure to pick it up when it is available.

You can sign up to be notified. The next Blue Moon is March 31, 2018. Should you miss it, you will wait have to wait until the end of 2020.

Step 2: Sprinkle BLB into a Clear Glass.

Place one large teaspoon of Bella Luna Blue into a clear cup. Bella Luna Blue contains a mix of zesty lemongrass, blueberry flavor, and flowers from the Butterfly Pea Flower plant. When you open the package, there is a strong blueberry aroma. I would liken it to the smell of Fruity Pebbles cereal. The mix is caffeine-free.

Step 3: Watch the Water Turn a Deep Blue.

The elusive mystery that is Bella Luna Blue begins first with the initial steeping. Whenever you’re ready, add hot water. They suggest heating the water to 212 degrees Fahrenheit. This will sit and steep for roughly five minutes while the blue color and flavors fully extract. As you pour hot water over the Butterfly Pea Flower plant, you will immediately notice the water become aqua blue. As the pedals steep longer, the blue will darken to indigo.

Step 4: Cut Up a Lemon and Squeeze Some In

Due to a particular plant enzyme in the Butterfly Pea Flower plant, the color of the water changes according to the pH. If you add something acidic, like lemon, the blue rapidly turns pink! The opposite holds true when you add a base. You can make the color switch back and forth. As for the acidity, lime works just as well. Lemon seems to be best since it complements the strong lemongrass flavoring.

Step 5: Add Baking Powder + Feel Like a Wizard

While I wouldn’t recommend this if you’re actually going to drink the cup, you can add a base like baking powder just for some fun. To my own surprise, it actually fizzes and bubbles over like the well known baking soda and vinegar chemical reaction. You can watch the reaction in the video at the top of the page.
