The Weirdest Translations I Came Across in China

Last Updated on August 3, 2023

Slightly unrelated but I just want to mention that I was absolutely obsessed with Beijing’s subway’s prerecorded message that plays near all of the escalators. As you prepare to step onto any escalator in the city, a gentle woman’s voice announces aloud: “请站稳, (Qing Zhan Wen) Please stand firm and hold the handrail.”

PLEASE STAND FIRM AND HOLD THE HANDRAIL
PLEASE STAND FIRM AND HOLD THE HANDRAIL

By the end of the trip, I caught myself repeating the message to myself as I walked all around Beijing.

请站稳! 请站稳! 请站稳!!!!
Please stand firm and hold the handrail!!!
