“Tell us about a teacher who had a real impact on your life, either for the better or the worse. How is your life different today because of him or her?” –The Daily Post
I think having a gay professor allowed me to become comfortable identifying with my sexuality. I would definitely say I viewed his as a role model. Considering the class revolved around LGBT-related topics, I was in the perfect environment to be myself without worry of being judged. I don’t think I could have taken that class at a more perfect time since it happened to align with me coming out to my family.
I really wish Texas Woman’s would have offered a class that revolved around LGBT topics. It wasn’t until I moved to Denton that I really started to accept myself. I did have a Global Woman’s Studies class that revolved around feminist issues. I felt like a lot of the problems that the LGBTQ community face are a product of sexism.
Professors can inspire us in unusual ways. I’ll forever be grateful for the opportunity to take a LGBT-oriented class in college.
